  • I love this, Katy. Writing formal prose can feel like being one of the old East-German informants–“Mein Name tut nichts zur Sache .” Of course there are the old critics… Hoffmann, Schumann, Berlioz–who invented new personae to speak through. Best of both worlds, I suppose. My late, great, friend Mary Rasmussen always wrote with a strong point of view which was both formal and unmistakeably personal. Charles Rosen could do this… or Tovey. My favourable (as you would spell it) kind of writing.
